The Carl Cannon Story
Mr. Carl W. Cannon started Carl Cannon Chevrolet Buick GMC Oldsmobile in 1966 in Downtown Jasper. In 1968, he moved the growing business to a piece of deserted property on what was then the new Highway 78 Bypass. Everyone thought he was crazy but within just a few years, Carl Cannon was in the center of the “New Jasper”. Over the next 40 years, Carl Cannon continued to grow, and was soon recognized as one of Alabama’s largest GM dealers even though we were located in a tiny town in Walker County. In 2007, we acquired Franklin Motor Company to become the new Carl Cannon Chevrolet Buick GMC Inc. Since that time, we have become the largest full line GM dealer in the state of Alabama! Each and every month we do business with thousands of customers from all over the southeast, servicing over 1600 vehicles a month in our service department alone! With that prosperity, it was time to move once again.
Looking forward just as his father had 40 years earlier, Mr. Jim Cannon made the bold decision to build a new state of the art facility on a barren piece of property on the new I-22 Corridor, positioning Carl Cannon only 30 minutes from downtown Birmingham. In 2009, we opened our new 60,000 square foot facility on Exit 65 paving the way for Jasper’s next retail migration. We are now proud to call Loves, Cracker Barrel, Waffle House and Sleep Inn neighbors on Carl Cannon Blvd and look forward to being joined by even more retailers in the very near future.
Everything we do as a dealership goes back to the guiding principles of Mr. Carl Cannon himself. No matter how much has changed over the past 50 years, his philosophies are as relevant today as they were in 1966. We recognize that in small town America (and increasingly, in the world of social media), word of mouth and reputation is everything. We must be transparent, honest, and community minded. The best way for us to do that, is to have quality employees who have bought into the Carl Cannon way of doing things (the right way of doing things) so that our customers come to know us on a personal level and can count on our staff to deliver consistent sales and service. The tenure among our 70 plus employees is over 5 times the industry average and this above all else, is responsible for our success over the past 5 decades. We truly are a dealership family.
